یکی از مقاله های امروز نیویورک تایمز به خبری با عنوان فوق اختصاص دارد. در این مقاله گزارش می دهد دکتر سوزان دادلی و دانشجویش در دانشگاه مک مستر کانادا شواهدی پیدا کرده اند حاکی از آنکه که گیاهان هم زندگی اجتماعی ای دارند که در آن فامیل های خود را می شناسند. این کشف از آن جهت بسیار جالب توجه و حتی غیر منتظره است که اغلب حیوانات نمی توانند فامیل های خود را تشخیص دهند.
آزمایشات دکتر دادلی نشان داده است که گیاهی بنام “سی راکت” (sea rocket) وقتی که گیاهان غیر مرتبط به خانواده خود را در نزدیکی خود می یابد ریشه های خود را که مواد غذایی جذب می کنند با شدت افزایش می دهد ولی وقتی یکی از بستگان خودش در نزدیکی اش یافت شود, مودبانه اینکار را نمی کند و در واقع به آن گیاه از فامیل خودش جا و امکان غذا می دهد!

عجب گیاهان نژاد پرستی هستند! بهتر است انسان کمتر از طبیعت الگو برداری کند!
البته می توان برای پیشبرد اهداف بیانیه ی حقوق گیاه را در بینشان تثویب کرد که البته راهش را نمی دانم.

ای بابا فردا این گیاهها هم به فکر ساختن بمب اتم علیه دشمنانشون میفتن. دلمون خوش بود گیاهان سبز نماد صلح و ذوستی هستند .

I think the title of the paper is kind of fiction and journalistic rather than scientific.
I believe that observed phenomenon is just a fact and could have many more reasonable explanations. The fact that this behavior is observed for plants of the same family is just a correlation which does not imply causation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Correlation_does_not_imply_causation
It does not necessarily mean that these plants can recognize and respect each other. The research by itself does not imply that there is such understanding of each other among plants.
Nonetheless, it was a very interesting observation.

Sara: Did you check if Dr. Dudley has published any thing out of that project? Seems the student is a Ph.D. student and therefore, I would expect they are doing a serious study given that their university is a credential one. I didn’t search and read their papers as that’s not my field. Just found it interesting if that is proven to be true. All I know about plants is that I’ve trained a plant that I’ve had to live without soil and without water!! Honestly, I had put this plant in water so that it finds roots and I plant it later in soil but then I forgot about it; the water dried up and the poor plant with lots of roots learned to live without water in that small bottle. It is still living under the same condition and it has been now 3 years of living without water and soil!

Wow incredible, could you tell me the name of the plant so that I do the same experiment here. Perhaps there is enough moist in the air.Is it in basement?

Sara: You mean the plant that I taught it to live without water; right? It is in my kitchen and receives lots of sunshine; but also perhaps enough moist in the air due to kitchen environment although I don’t cook that much anymore!! Oh, I don’t know its name; sorry. If you show me their pictures I can identify it though. I may come to Iran soon
